A scary monster?

So maybe this is a common thing for 2 year old kids, but I don't know if I should believe Jake or not. Jacob my oldest child keeps saying he is seeing scary monsters in the house. It's not always in his room at night either, he will say it during the middle of the day standing in the living room, or my bedroom, or even in the hallway. I try to tell him that monsters are not real, they are pretend, but he insists that there is a monster. Then the other night Brenton said he woke saying there was a girl in his closet and he was scared. Brenton reassured him and showed him there was no girl in there.

So, do I play this off like he is just being imaginative, or is it something more? I know they say that kids have this "sixth sense" of seeing things adults can't, but is that really true, should I believe him?

I know this must sound really weird, but I too think it's weird! Let me know what you think or know about this.

  1. Miles and Linus have come up with some pretty creative things, too. I'm not a beliver in the "sixth sense" thing...I think that they absorb so many things around them(stuff like TV and adult conversations that we think they're paying no attention to) that manifest in their dreams and imaginations.

Then again, what the heck do I know? :)

  2. I really don't know myself, but I do know that I have in the past seen someone walking around our bed at night and standing at the foot of our bed. I'm not quite sure what to think of that! I just encourage you to stop and pray with him and ask the scarry girl or monsters to go away. Nico went through the scarry monster in the closet stage and would wake up screaming and so we would console and pray.

  3. I think that Jacob is a prophet who communicates with the Spirit of Samuel (check out 1 Samuel 28-how do you explain/preach that text?).

Actually, I think he's probably watched Monsters Inc. 80,000 too many times.

Stopping to pray with him is a great idea. Bring Jesus to the center of everything. Then even if it is real (see Ephesians 6:12) we have the power of Christ.

Keep up the good work Mom.

  4. Just for some reassurance Steph, Jacob didn't mention anything to me over the weekend about it~so maybe it is a phase.

  5. I think all little kids go through the monster stage (I can vividly remember always jumping in and out of my bed because if I didn't the moster would grab my leg), but I also believe that the spirit realm is a real thing. Having grown up in a pastors family, I know that the devil is out in full attack on families like ours who have dedicated their lives to defeating him. So it would not surprise me that the devil would launch an attack on your kid to freak them out.
I agree with Lori that the best idea is to pray with Jake and I would even go so far as to teach him to rebuke the monsters in Jesus' name whenver he sees them. Jesus is bigger and stronger, and if we just call on him, he'll always come rescue us - just like Susan's horn in the Narnia movie. :)
It certainly could just be a phase or pizza dreams or something like that, but the spirit realm is real and our kids need to know how to walk in victory over principalities and powers.

  6. Thanks Audra and Lori, that was very helpful, I will defineatly be praying more with Jake and using those scary opportinities to teach him more about Jesus and His love and protection.

  7. Totally unrelated to this post, Steph, but did you hear that Ken Barlow is leaving KARE 11? I guess you'll have no excuse not to watch WCCO from now on! :) See the article from the Star Tribune below:

Trivia question: Name the Twins minor-league lefthanded pitching prospect traded in 1990 for veteran Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Junior Ortiz.
    Answer: Michael Pomeranz.

Pomeranz, formerly of WCBS-TV in NYC, was announced as Frank Vascellaro's replacement Thursday, two days after Vascellaro resigned. It is now clear they really didn't want Vascellaro.

On Tuesday, KARE-11 GM John Remes was all about showing Vascellaro that love, in the agape sense. "Today is about Frank and our respect for him, and I'd like to keep it about Frank," Remes said when asked about the impending loss of meteorologist Ken Barlow to Boston's WBZ-TV.

On Thursday, Remes officially announced that Barlow was leaving and that Pomeranz was replacing Vascellaro.

Why wasn't Thursday about Barlow and respect for him? And announcing Pomeranz on Thursday looked a little like Remes was giving a shot to his "friend" Vascellaro by demonstrating how quickly he could be replaced.

I have been awaiting Remes' responses to those questions.

And I still would like to hear back from Pomeranz. On Wednesday night -- note the timing -- I left him a voice-mail asking whether he was coming to the Twin Cities.

  8. Yes Audra, the news is never the same now without the loved Barlow. However, I have been more into WCCO now, but still can't handle Bill Carlson- he looks like a troll.

  9. I wanted to share a story that is not a "someone told someone who told someone" story but one I heard firsthand from the family involved. Mom and Dad were going on a mission trip and they left their 2 sons (around 3 and 5) at home with grandma. While on the trip Mom and Dad kept praying for angels to protect their sons. When they got home the grandma told of Matthew waking in the middle of the night and calling out to her to tell her there were angels sitting on the foot of his bed! So, I too believe in the possibility although it could be Monsters Inc, etc... But prayer is also a perfect answer, eh?

  10. Brianna was afraid of the Cookie Monster. She actually never saw him. But, I believe that she was afraid. Generally it's the wind, or the furnace or rain, or something along the noise side. I quit trying to argue that there is no such thing. Instead I say it's ok. Cookie Monster went to sleep now. He's really tired.
We do pray every night, and when she's really visablly scared, we do pray, walk out of the room for a bit, talk and go back to sleep.
As far as the spirt relm...I do believe that, but most of the time it's my daughter tring to stay up late.
